³¢¸é°ä°ä’sÌýEarly College programÌýisÌýmore than just a pathway to earningÌýcollegeÌýcreditsÌýwhile still in high schoolÌý—Ìýit’sÌýalsoÌýaÌýcommunityÌýof learners and educators. Few stories capture that better than the connection between veteran teacher Jim Sitomer and his formerÌýEarly CollegeÌýstudent,Ìýnow fellow teacher, Richard Burnham.Ìý

Sitomer, a math teacher at Kingswood Regional High School,Ìýhas been teaching Early College courses forÌýnearly twoÌýdecades.ÌýHe enjoys givingÌýstudents the chance to graduate high school with college credits, saving themÌýmoneyÌýand building confidence for the future. “It’s a great opportunity,â€ he says. “Between APÌýclassesÌýand Early College, students can leave high school with more than a semester’s worth of credits, and that can make a tremendous difference.â€Ìý

Among the many students whoÌýpassed through his classroom, Burnham stood outÌýto Sitomer. “Richard has always been exceptional, and his students are lucky to have him guiding them in their high-level classes.â€ÌýÌý

For Burnham, what began as a chance toÌýadvance his education andÌýearn college credits has turned into a lifelong commitment toÌýteaching. Burnham, now a math teacher at Moultonborough Academy, creditsÌý³¢¸é°ä°ä’sÌýEarly College programÌýwithÌýsetting him on the path to his career.Ìý

As a student at Kingswood Regional High School, Burnham enrolled in accounting, personal finance, and statistics throughÌýtheÌýEarly CollegeÌýprogram. “TakingÌýstatistics and other courses through ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï in high school was the first time I experienced a true college-level math course,â€ Burnham recalls. “The pacing, expectations, and depth of thinkingÌýrequiredÌýpushed me to become more independent as a learner. It taught me how to manage college-style deadlines, communicate mathematical reasoning clearly, and advocate for myself when I needed help.â€Ìý

That early exposureÌýleft him well prepared toÌýpursue a degree in Math Education at the University of New Hampshire. “I walked into my first math courses with confidence because I already knew what college-level rigor felt like.ÌýHaving earned actual college credit gave me a sense of accomplishment and made the transition feel less intimidating,â€ he said.Ìý

For the past seven years,ÌýBurnhamÌýhas taught Early CollegeÌýstatistics at Moultonborough Academy, recently addingÌýprecalculus to his offerings.ÌýHe now worksÌýwithÌýSitomer,Ìýthe very instructor who first introduced him to college-level math. “WorkingÌýalongsideÌýthe sameÌýstatistics instructor I had in high school has been surreal but incredibly meaningful,â€ Burnham said. “JimÌýwas the one whoÌýintroduced me toÌýcollege-level mathÌýand showed meÌýhow powerful data could be. Now to be teaching the same course and collaborating with him as a colleague feels like everything has come full circle.ÌýIt continually reminds me of how powerful good teaching can be and how the right mentor can change the direction of a student’s life.â€ÌýThe two still connect regularly, not only through teaching but also as coaches of their school’s math teams.Ìý

Burnham believes the Early College program offers high school studentsÌýthe chance to experience college-level expectations while still having the support of their school environment. “It helps them build confidence, develop stronger academic and time-management skills, and earn credits that can ease their transition into college,â€ he explains.Ìý

For Sitomer, seeing Burnham’s journey is deeply rewarding.ÌýIt’sÌýa clearÌýexample ofÌýhow the program helpsÌýstudents gain academic advantagesÌýandÌýtheÌýdeterminationÌýto pursue ambitious paths. Burnham’s success story is echoed by many others who reach out to Sitomer, sharing updates about new jobs, career milestones, and gratitude for the opportunities Early College provided.Ìý

Both educators agree that the program is transformative.ÌýBurnham says, “TheÌýEarly College program is more than just a way to earn college credit.ÌýIt’sÌýan opportunity for students to discover their potential, build independence, and gain confidence in their abilities. It sets them up for success in college and beyond while giving them experiences that can shape their future in meaningful ways.â€ÌýÌý

Sitomer encourages students toÌýprepare in advance so they canÌýtake advantage of the program.Ìý“Make sure youÌýmeet theÌýprerequisitesÌýto takeÌýthe Early College classes. And challenge yourselves!â€ÌýBurnham, once the student who did just that, now embodies the program’s promise.ÌýHis journey shows howÌýEarly CollegeÌýhelpsÌýshape futures in ways thatÌýimpactÌýtheÌýcommunityÌýfor years to come.Ìý
